Big Journal - Big Draw

24 September - 16 October

The Project

A Carclew Youth Arts Creative Education Partnership, Artist Residence Initiative, in partnership with Country Arts SA and Murray Bridge North Schools, Big Journal – Big Draw will take place between April and September 2010 at Murray Bridge – The Regional Centre for Culture.
Inspired by a concept that originated in the United Kingdom, Big Journal - Big Draw takes students, teachers and the school community on an artistic journey of exploration. A journey where they learn and practice new visual arts techniques inspired by their school, their heritage and where they live.

Artists, John Whitney, James Parker and Sebastian Humphreys, supported by Project Coordinator, Ella Pak Poy will work with 120 Yr 4/5 students in four one-week blocks. These drawing workshops provide students with a chance to experience many mediums and techniques as they fill their journals with thoughts, dreams, ideas and reflections.

From the outset, only two main rules have applied in ‘The Shed’ where the workshops take place – ‘no erasers’ and ‘there’s no such thing as a mistake’ – from there, anything and everything is possible and the drawings are flowing.

Big Journal – Big Draw provides students and teachers at Murray Bridge North Schools with a unique chance to engage with professional artists as well as an opportunity to be involved at all stages of the project - from research, concept, planning and design through to creation, exhibition and evaluation.

Mostly, everyone is learning that drawing can be heaps of fun and in the words of one of the students... ‘Give me a real drawing – I can handle it!’

The Team

Program Manager: Leigh Mangin
Project Coordinator: Ella Pak Poy
Lead Artists: James Parker
John Whitney
Emerging Artist: Sebastian Humphreys

... and over 120 very talented Year 4/5 students from Murray Bridge North Schools, and their teachers

Big Journal – Big Draw is a Creative Education Partnership - Artist in Residence Initiative, funded by The Australia Council for the Arts through Arts SA and managed by Carclew Youth Arts, in partnership with Country Arts SA and Murray Bridge North Schools.

GRANTS FOR SOUTH AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLS

Artists In Schools (AIS) is a long-running schools arts residency program. It was established to encourage students’ participation in the arts and develop their appreciation of it through creative interaction with a professional arts practitioner.

Artists in Schools funding means that South Australian Schools can apply to Carclew Youth Arts for:

  • Financial support towards an AIS project, to take place in your school in the coming calendar year;
  • A contribution towards artist fees (up to $2,750) and, in the case of regional schools, a contribution to travel costs and a living away allowance;
  • Support for arts projects in any or more than one artform which does not need to be complex in nature or large in size.

AIS is designed to provide students and school communities with first-hand experience of the work of a professional artist by:

  • seeing a professional artist at work and learning about the artist’s role in the community.
  • working with a professional artist on an arts project; and
  • learning about the artistic process.

AIS also strengthens the role of the arts in the school community by:

  • encouraging students’ involvement in the creative process;
  • providing opportunities for students to gain new skills;
  • providing opportunities that may help students’ confidence, sense of identity and self-esteem;
  • promoting the value of the arts; and
  • enriching and adding new perspectives to the school’s existing arts curriculum in line with the South Australian Curriculum Standards and Accountability Framework.

Off The Couch

2011

Off The Couch (OTC) is a music program created especially to provide industry exposure and experience for bands, musicians and budding event managers.

Bands have the opportunity to play in professional gigs in some of Adelaide’s hottest venues. Many well-known SA bands played their first public gigs at an OTC show. This is an invaluable opportunity for young bands to gain the exposure to propel them forward in the music industry.

The Off The Couch team will learn the tricks of the trade from music and events industry professionals in weekly training sessions. Here they will learn to program, promote and produce gigs and will assist with the event management of six Off The Couch live music shows.

OTC engages music lovers on many levels – as event coordinators, promoters, stage managers, musicians and audiences.

In 2011 there will be six Off The Couch live music events held in various venues around Adelaide. Call out for bands, musicians and team members for 2011 will take place late 2010. For more information, please contact Carclew Youth Arts.
