THE ARK – Section 1

1. ARTSsmart

2. Induction

ARTSsmart

ARTSsmart is the first strategy for arts education in South Australian schools and preschools.

It is an initiative of the Department of Education and Children’s Services in association with Arts SA.

ARTSsmart presents a way of building strong and effective partnerships between schools and preschools and the arts industry, and provides an invigorating new focus for all people concerned with arts education in our state.

The ARTSsmart strategy aims to achieve three key outcomes:
The continuing engagement of children and young people in arts education
Partnerships between arts education and arts practitioners
    Arts experiences for lifelong learning

INDUCTION - You're one of us now!

The process of induction will likely span a continuum, from very basic information eg. Where are the toilets? What time structure does the school operate on? to key information about school policies eg. What student behaviour management strategies are in place?

These pages will include schools' responsibilities and a check-list of things that artists need to know in order to have safe and stress free experiences in schools.

Organisation and Management of the School/Worksite

The school needs to provide information about special events such as sports day, swimming carnivals, camps etc. which may impact on planning.

Occupational Health, Welfare and Safety

It is essential for the artist to be shown emergency evacuation and invacuation procedures on their first day.

Communication Processes

Is there a day/weekly staff bulletin? How does the school newsletter work? How does information flow between the staff and School Council? How does the Student Representative Council give and receive information?

Student Population

Information about the student population and the general community is important for the artist/s to consider when planning and delivering an arts program.

Information could include:

•  a school context statement (detailing information about the socio-economic circumstances which prevail in the area)

•  information about students with special needs

•  students, identified as being 'at risk'

•  Aboriginal students

•  students from non-English speaking background

•  religious backgrounds

•  family composition (eg. single parent families)

•  any particular programs which are provided to assist these students.

Parent Participation

How are parents involved in various aspects of the school community? What expectations are there for parent involvement in special projects.

Social Justice and Equal Opportunity

Artists will require information about the school's sexual and racist harassment grievance procedures.
