CARGO – An Artists in Schools Initiative

CARGO – An Artists in Schools Initiative is a project of Carclew Youth Arts, sponsored through the BHP Billiton Youth Arts Fund in partnership with the South Australian Youth Arts Board and Arts SA.

The CARGO project is managed through Carclew’s Arts and Education program and aims to provide opportunities for students in Roxby Downs, Port Augusta, Port Pirie and Whyalla, to engage with passionate, committed and highly skilled professional artists through the delivery of artistic residencies in schools.

From 2007 – 2010, CARGO seeks to build community capacity in these regions through the provision of artistic residencies that will increase the abilities and available resources for students, schools, emerging artists and the community to be involved in the arts.

Following on from CARGO’s success last year in the communities of Port Pirie, Port Augusta and Whyalla   CARGO 2008 will engage students from Roxby Downs in an artistic residency project which will have a significant public art outcome.CARGO 2008 – Public Art Project, Roxby DownsWith the support of BHP Billiton Youth Arts Fund, Carclew Youth Arts has appointed an artistic team comprising Adelaide based sculptor, Gerry McMahon and Roxby Downs based jeweler, Rachel Young, to work with students and the community to create a sculpture commemorating the 20th Year Anniversary of Roxby Downs. Hundreds of students from Roxby Downs Area School and St Barbara’s Parish School will have the opportunity to participate in the project in some way whether it is through preliminary research, design and development or documentation of the project.

An Advisory Group, with representation from BHP Billiton, the Roxby Downs Municipal Council, Roxby Downs Area School, St Barbara’s Parish School and TAFE, has been established by Carclew Youth Arts to provide a mechanism for the organisation to consult with key stakeholders, seek specialist advice and enable community participation in the planning and development of the project.

From preliminary community consultation through to fabrication and installation of the public artwork, Carclew’s  Project Team will be working closely with the community through out 2008.  The public sculpture will be unveiled on Saturday 1 November 2008 as part of the BHP Billiton Family Day.
