CARGO – An Artists in Schools Initiative
CARGO – An Artists in Schools Initiative, is a project of Carclew Youth Arts, sponsored through the BHP Billiton Youth Arts Fund in partnership with the South Australian Youth Arts Board and Arts SA. Over the next four years, CARGO will provide opportunities for Roxby Downs and Upper Spencer Gulf regional schools to participate in diverse and vibrant arts projects. CARGO connects children and young people with passionate, committed, highly skilled professional artists across a range of art forms.
In its inaugural year, CARGO offered students from 8 government schools in the regions of Port Augusta, Port Pirie and Whyalla with the opportunity to engage in a week-long artistic residency with a team of two professional South Australian artists during May/June, 2007. From digital animation to physical theatre, there were four exciting and innovative CARGO projects on offer, as follows:
Too Much Trouble
Too Much Trouble combines theatre, literature and digital technology in a virtual board game challenging its players in a quest of exploration and self-expression.
Artists: Daisy Brown – Theatre Director & Mario Spate – Musician and Actor
Finders Keepers
Combining photography, ceramics and site-specific sculpture, Finders Keepers investigates the concepts of permanent and temporary forms of art making through the exploration of environment and culture.
Artists: Sarah-Jane Cook – Photographer & Gus Clutterbuck – Ceramicist
Transformation
Transformation explores the complexities of change through a rollercoaster of dance and theatre workshops that culminate in an original and edgy physical theatre performance.
Artists: Stephen Noonan – Actor & Dancer & Kelly Alexander – Dancer & Choreographer
The Inhabitants
Digital technology and the simplicity of “neanderthal” art collide to create The Inhabitants. This project combines digital Flash animation with the construction of large paper maché sculptural forms in the exploration of people and the spaces they inhabit.
Artists: Lachlan Haig – Puppeteer & Luku – Digital Animator
