St Joseph's Parish School Gladstone
PROJECT COORDINATOR: Bernadette Lacey
ARTIST: John Whitney
PROJECT: An historical and contemporary mural project.
St Joseph’s Parish School is situated in the mid-north town of Gladstone, 250kms north of Adelaide. 45 students attend the school from the township as well as neighbouring towns including Laura, Georgetown, Crystal Brook and Wirrabara. The school was founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph and operates under the Josephite philosophy “Love in all Things”.
Aim:
To raise the profile of the school by including two feature murals that the students will create with the artist.
The students worked with John to create 'The Mary McKillop Mural' and 'The Gladstone Mural'. After finalising the design, John drew the murals and the students worked in small groups contributing to various sections.
Outcomes:
The students learnt many new techniques and were given an opportunity that would not normally be available to them.
'Overall the mural project was very worthwhile for the students, staff and parents of the school. The opportunity to work in a small country school and see the work appreciated was fantastic. A big thank you to the Carclew Artists in Schools program for enabling it to happen.' Artist
