PROJECT COORDINATOR: Paul Weinert
ARTIST: Tony Goodwin
PROJECT: ‘Synthesising Media for Filmmaking’ – a filmmaking / media project.
Aims and Objectives:
• To increase the children’s knowledge and skill level in terms of film making techniques.
• To introduce digital editing to the students.
• To promote the art of film making to the school community.
Tony Goodwin is a Media Studies Teacher at St Paul’s College. Tony has had extensive experience in the area of student filmmaking. Tony has also had an active involvement with the Young Filmmakers Festival over a number of years.
Tony initially spent a day in the year 6/7 room focusing on interviewing techniques, shooting and digital video editing. Several students from St Paul’s College also assisted with this process. Tony sent the resulting video to the class which they greatly enjoyed. Two teachers from our school also visited St Paul’s College to view their Media Studies Unit. They had hands on experience on the video editing program, animation program and viewed several student made films.
Tony spent a day with our Pedal Prix team and the Pedal Prix Event. He interviewed the students and gave them a hands on experience with the camera. This was edited by Tony and was made into a short film.
Outcomes:
• The students gained hands on experience with the camera and video editing programs.
• The experience introduced digital video to the staff.
• The Pedal Prix video was shown to the school community, which raised the public awareness of this art form.
Highlights:
The viewing by the school community of the Pedal Prix film was very well received.
The school is now investigating video editing programs, which are applicable for our current computer. We have also arranged a D.D day on video editing for the staff early in Term 2.
‘The program provided the students with a good introduction to several key filmmaking skills – it would have been beneficial to have more of the equipment on site for follow-up’. Teacher
30 students were involved in this filmmaking / media project.
