PROJECT COORDINATOR: Anne Sammut and Annette Fellows
ARTIST:Megan O’Hara
PROJECT: ‘School Identity’ – a visual arts mural project.
Aims:
• To involve students in a project where they could work with a professional artist.
• To develop awareness of the ‘identity’ of the school, to be able to depict this identity through visual art.
• To work as a team to produce an overall view of Pooraka Primary School.
The project resulted in a painted mural on four panels. Panels go together to produce an overall picture of the school. The artist worked with the students from R-7 to design and develop the ‘picture’. Each class nominated 2 to 3 children to work on an external wall for the whole school community to view.
Outcomes:
The students gained: exposure to painting on a large scale; exposure to working with a professional artist; confidence building; building creative skills; and an increased sense of their identity within their school.
‘I was really pleased with final result considering the project was under some pressure due to other school activities. Megan was very understanding and willing to work around other school commitments . Her rapport with the students was the key to the success of the project.’ Teacher
50 students were involved in this visual arts mural project.
