PROJECT COORDINATOR: Jon Stark

ARTIST: John Whitney

PROJECT: ‘Sport’ – a visual arts mural project.

Aims:
• To use thought, imagination, research and experimentation to create the murals to convey an appreciation of community and sport.
• To work as individuals and in groups to develop and execute art works that demonstrate awareness of community issues.
• To select, plan and construct the art works using appropriate skills, techniques and processes.

The students and artist worked together to create a series of murals to decorate the school's new gymnasium.

There were six murals on the inside walls and one on the outside wall facing Magill Road. The murals had the following themes: Throwing, Hitting, Kicking, Athletics and Aquatics - as well as including other activities such as surfing, skateboarding and hopscotch.

Outcomes:
The students worked together with John to create a wonderful, colourful environment used by over 1,000 children from both the primary and the junior primary schools. They gained many visual arts skills during the project as well as a pride in their work - one they will be reminded of every time they use the gym! The students experienced improved self-esteem, art skills, team work skills and a great pride in the finished murals.

570 students were involved in this project.

‘Thanks to the students for their ideas and help in actually doing the project, and also to Carclew and the 'Artists in Schools' project for the opportunity to do the project.’ Artist

‘A superb result. All of the students involved and an excellent final product. I highly recommend the artist, John Whitney, to other schools.’ Teacher
