JACK LANGRIDGE GOULD

INKY TALES

March 11- April 2

Artist Statement:

There is an element of drawing that makes it irrepressible. When I see a line of water spilt upon the dinner table or a row of knots in the wood of my wardrobe, I feel an urge to take over, join them, expand upon them, fill them in, and impose my own idea of the subject’s potential.  This, surely, is the primal essence of drawing, the motivation for cave paintings that emerged from impressions upon the rock surface, capturing early human imaginations. Drawing required far less mechanical invention than other visual disciplines. Instead, it was invented as we first reflected upon the impressions we left upon our surroundings.

‘Inky Tales’ is a collection of 4 pieces that have been developed and changed over the last 2 years. This collection is an offshoot from my Honours work (at the South Australian School of art) called ‘thINK bubbles’.

The three fundamental concerns of this project have been drawing, thought and their interrelation with one another. For me the activity of drawing has always been about indulging the imagination, the motivation for this project has been in understanding what it is that the imagination desires and what attributes of drawing suite this.

CARLO JENSEN

Cynicism Some things old and new

Carclew Youth Arts Foyer

Exhibition Dates: Feb 25 - March 2, 2008. Open 9.30am – 5.30pm

Carlo Jensen works from a design perspective, resulting in priority being given to interesting aesthetic elements and a clear communication of ideas. He is interested in the relationship between text and image, the ways in which they work off each other and can change preconceived notions of meaning and purpose, often found in propaganda and contemporary street art. These works were created as an expression of his current view of the world around him as influenced by media, politics, philosophies and popular culture.

The Carclew Youth Arts Exhibitition Programs are designed to profile the work of South Australia's visual artists under the age of 27.

The main venue for the project is the Foyer Gallery at Carclew Youth Arts, 11 Jeffcott Street, North Adelaide.

Other venues may be programmed throughout the year, and have previously included the Adelaide Festival Centre, the Adelaide City Council and the Office For Youth.

The exhibition venues are suitable for 2D artworks that are appropriate for children to view. At least one exhibition during the year is aimed at developing child audiences in its content and approach.

The Foyer Gallery is programmed by a curator, with Lara Merrington chosen as the upcoming curator for the January-June 2008 program.

The Foyer Gallery curator selects the artists and the artworks to be exhibited and arranges for installation. Curators choose Artists on the basis of conceptual standard, artistic quality and merit, and cultural relevance.

The curator produces a one page catalogue containing an artist's statement, brief biography and a list of works as supplied by the artist to promote the sale of their work.  Carclew does not take a commission fee for any works sold.

The opportunity to exhibit in a public space and the exposure generated through this experience assists artists to extend their professional development opportunities and become more recognised as actively participating in the visual arts community of South Australia.

The Foyer Gallery is available for viewing to the public from Monday to Friday, 9.30am - 5.30pm. There are no exhibitions during the South Australian School Holidays.

Artists who have exhibited in the Foyer Gallery in the recent past include:

Laura Amos, Roy Ananda, Fontaine Anderson, Sebastian Calabretto, Romi Graham, Gina Leonello, Jacob Logos, Luku, Logan Macdonald, Peter McKay, Lara Merrington, Chris Nash, Fleur Noble, Elizabeth Pascale, Lisa Picciau, Julia Robinson, Mark Siebert, Lucy Turnbull, Anne Weckert, Laura Wills and Meghann Wilson.
