Masterclass with Craig Walsh, Deep Creek Conservation Park SA, May 2008

Craig Walsh was born in Orange in 1966, and lives in Brisbane, Australia.
Primarily interested in hybrid / site-specific projects and the exploration of alternative contexts for contemporary art, Craig Walsh’s work often utilises new media and projection in response to existing and natural environments. He works across a range of artforms including theatre, architecture, public works, gallery exhibitions, natural environments and festivals.  

He has developed and lead workshops that have taken place in diverse natural locations including Stradbroke Island, Black Rock National Park, Binna Burra National Park, Green Mountain National Park, and Castle Hill (Townsville).

Craig’s work has been selected for major survey exhibitions, commissions and residencies both nationally and internationally, including the Yokohama International Triennale of Contemporary Art, Japan; the Fuji Rock Festival, Japan; Under The Radar, Liverpool, England; the National Sculpture Prize & Exhibition, National Gallery of Australia; Havana Biennale, Cuba; Experimenta Vanishing Point, Melbourne; the Anne Landa Award, Art Gallery of NSW; the Adelaide Biennale of Australian Art, Art Gallery of SA; the Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane; and Ssamsie Space, Seoul, Korea. Recent projects took place at Sendai Mediateque and Tokyo Wondersite in Japan; the Australian Centre for the Moving Image; Media City Seoul, Korea; the Australia Council’s studio residency in New York and Nuit Blanche in Toronto where his work received the Peoples Choice Award.

This masterclass was a part of Carclew Youth Arts Breeding Ground Industry Development program. This program invites artists of national or international significance to ignite, inspire, provoke and challenge local practitioners and audiences to profile innovation and stimulate critical debate.  8 participants lived and worked together over 4 days and 3 nights in an old homestead in Deep Creek Conservation Park, without mobile phone reception or internet. Alison Currie, Kyra Kimpton, Lachlan Tetlow-Stuart, Cindi Drennan, Reuben Duffy, Danica Wells-Heitmann, Ben Moss & Lara Merrington spent the days exploring the Conservation Park and creating large scale projection artworks.The masterclass was programmed as part of the ASSITEJ World Congress and Performing Arts Festival.
