River SitesThe commencement of Term 2, marks the beginning of Carclew’s 2007 River Sites Project. This year the project has moved to work in collaboration with students from Waikerie High Schools Indigenous Representative Council. Developing the theme “Harmony – People and the environment; Past Present and Future!” the 17 predominantly Indigenous students from Waikerie High School will design and manufacture a mosaic wall mural to adorn the school canteen. The students will work under the guidance and mentorship of local Artist Stephen Schubert, and mosaic artist Michael Tye. This project will encourage the artistic expression of young people by giving them free access to interactive, non-competitive arts workshops that are contemporary and popular, promoting positive images of the Indigenous communities living in the Riverland regions. The students are working from a specially set up studio at shop 1/7 Peake Terrace, Waikerie, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout Term 2, so that residents of Waikerie can watch the progress of the mosaic mural over the period of the project. Students have completed the mosaic design – a large rain moth, or weikari moth, which appears around this time of the year after heavy rains. The name weikari is an indigenous word for ‘many wings’ and it is from this word that the town of Waikarie derives its name. The design and progress of the artwork will be on display at all times in the shop window during term 2, 2007. The project is held in a nominated region for 2-3 years.
