Alexandra Weaver and Carclew Youth Arts Patron Mrs Marjorie Fitz-Gerald OAM JP

SA’S HOMEGROWN YOUNG TALENT RECOGNISED!

The South Australian Youth Arts Board is very excited to announce $38,000 will go towards four exceptionally talented young South Australian Artists as part of the State Government funded scholarship program.

Minister Assisting the Premier in the Arts, recently made the announcement, at Carclew Youth Arts.

The four scholarships in new writing, visual arts and performing arts – to be taken up in 2007 – were open to South Australians under the age of 27.

The recipient of the $6,500 Independent Arts Foundation New Writing Scholarship is Alexandra Weaver.
Alexandra completed a Bachelor of Arts with Honours at Flinders University, receiving a Chancellor’s Letter of Commendation in both 2001 and 2004. She has had many works published including a short anthology. Alexandra will use her scholarship to travel to Sydney and work with professional editor and mentor Kathryn Heyman.

"I see the scholarship’s most significant benefit as the opportunity to refine and develop my writing towards further publication. Essentially, the scholarship indicates the Board’s confidence in my work as a writer and, at this stage of my development, I believe such validation would shape my career profoundly.Alexandra Weaver

The recipient of the $6,500 Colin Thiele New Writing Scholarship is Rebecca Ebert.
Rebecca graduated with First Class Honours in Creative Writing at Adelaide University. She was a monthly columnist for the Barossa & Light Herald and has had work published in the poetry collection On Edge. She won the 2001 Young South Australian of the Year Award for her contribution to the community and advocating for rural life. Earlier this year, Rebecca took four months leave of absence from her PhD studies to complete the first draft of her novel, Finding Laura Gibb. The scholarship will enable Rebecca to create a publishable manuscript of this novel.

Receiving a Youth Arts Scholarship will enable me to work towards a final draft of the manuscript ‘Finding Laura Gibb’, whilst also giving me the confidence to continue developing my vice as a young South Australian Writer.” Rebecca Ebert

The recipient of the $12,500 Ruth Tuck Scholarship is Deborah Prior.
Deborah is currently completing her final year of a Bachelor of Visual Arts at the Adelaide Central School of Art. She has participated in numerous exhibitions and was the instigator of a cross-institutional visit to the Melbourne Art Fair. The Scholarship will allow Deborah to undertake a 10-week research and development trip to London in 2007, where she will spend time at the Foundation for Women’s Arts.

The Ruth Tuck Scholarship will provide me with an opportunity for travel that would otherwise be out of my reach. It will provide me with the opportunity for unique research to better inform my art practice.” Deborah Prior.

The recipient of the $12,500 Dame Ruby Litchfield Scholarship is Fleur Green.
Fleur is a uniquelty talented percussionist and will use her scholarship to study with Professor Van Sice at the Peabody Conservatory of St John’s Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA. Professor Van Sice is a leader in contemporary percussion literature. The two met in October last year at the Adelaide International Marimba Festival – at which time Professor Van Sice invited Fleur to study with him. Fleur commenced her study in September this year and will complete her course in 2008.

I am passionate to promote percussion music and feel that in Professor Van Sice’s hands my skills as a player will be refined and developed, and I will learn new skills associated with commissioning repertoire and performing on the international circuit.” Fleur Green.
